their doors at 6:00 p.m. had people around the block, waiting to get in. and it was the same scene at stores around the country. 'tis the season. to be not so jolly. around the nation, wild scenes, as frantic customers were determined to snatch up some of those jaw-dropping thanksgiving thursday deals. watch the man in orange, as he wrestles his way through a crowd at a north carolina walmart. another unruly shopper, tackled by police. bullets flew outside this kohl's in illinois. multiple injuries reported after an alleged holiday robbery ended in a shoot-out. a brawl broke out in this california walmart parking lot, where more than 3,000 people were waiting to get in. and in southeast texas, an altercation over electronics. >> it was a big, old brawl. i guess they got kicked out and

they didn't get a tv anyway. >> reporter: but from coast-to-coast, most scenes were just eager shoppers, enjoying early store openings and a frenzy of big-time savings. >> this is perfect. 100 pieces for 10 bucks, you can't beat that. >> reporter: early bird k-mart customers flooding in at 6:00 a.m. thanksgiving day. at the 5:00 p.m. opening of toys "r" us in new york city, checkout lines were packed in five minutes. 8:00 p.m. shoppers swarmed jcpenney. and this was the scene at macy's. doors and wallets opening wide on black friday eve. several walmart stores, hitting their peak capacity. further agitating those enthusiastic shoppers. and no issues here at best buy to report. they've had to send people in and out in waves. that's how busy things have been this morning. the big sellers are the tablets. those ipads. those flat-screen televisions. those, bianna, are the big, big door-buster deals that

>> it will take until the end of november for an optimally functioning website. >> reporter: from the top, where the buck stops. >> by the end of this month, we anticipate that it is going to be working the way it is supposed to, all right? >> reporter: we heard the apology. >> we did fumble the ball on it. and what i'm going to do is make sure that we get it fixed. >> reporter: and here we are, reckoning day. did the white house manage to fix the problem, which has helped shrink obama's approval rating down to 42%? >> there's been some significant improvements. >> reporter: so, for the user, what can he or she expect now that they've had this time to fix? >> i think that they can expect to have a lot less issues and errors with their user experience. >> reporter: we asked independent i.t. consultant brian loughlin to go over the repaired site with us. he's been monitoring the reconstruction of healthcare.gov. and now, he's showing us the progress that's been made. that seems like a critique of the content of the website,

rather than its functionality. whether or not, i mean, you were just clicking through here. >> yep. >> reporter: it didn't freeze. >> absolutely. >> reporter: and it didn't shut down. >> it is functional. it absolutely is functional. and it performed reasonably well. absolutely. >> reporter: and that's a big improvement over what it was doing in october. >> absolutely. >> reporter: in fact, in october, it took about eight seconds to click through a page. now, it's down to about a half-second. so, there's been big improvement. we'll see how it goes by saturday. dan? >> this is a huge weekend for the obama administration. >> we'll see if that improvement is good enough for the american people. >> absolutely. all right, time for the morning's other top stories. we go over to ron claiborne. good morning, everyone. we begin with breaking news. a massive explosion overnight after a gas pipeline ruptured in missouri. the blast was so intense, the flames lit up the sky. and it could be heard from miles away. the flames spread to a nearby farm, destroying several out buildings. the fire is mostly under

control. and amazingly, there's no reports of any injuries. china is now responding in a big way about a territorial dispute in the east china sea. today, china sent fighter jets over the island chain that both it and japan claims as theirs. just days after the u.s. sent b-52 bombers, unarmed, into the region. vice president biden will discuss the matter with the chinese when he visits that country next week. and, well, so much for the so-called comet of the century. ison went behind the sun yesterday. and well, it hasn't been seen ever since. the close encounter apparently melted the comet or broke it up. astronomers believe they are seeing a streak of light that may be a piece. ison's trip to the sun only took 5 1/2 million years. and back here on earth, brooklyn nets coach jason kidd is being fined 50,000 bucks by the nba for spilling his drink on to the floor during a game.

the league said kidd intentionally spilled that drink to delay a game. that was done with eight seconds left in a close game and the nets out of timeouts. we told you yesterday, while the spill was being cleaned up, the nets had a chance to draw up a play to try to tie that game with a three-pointer. didn't work. they lost anyway. and finally, an oregon family is celebrating the birth of baby emma on thanksgiving eve. and what a way to come into the world. emma was in such a hurry, her quick-thinking grandma pulled over to the shoulder of busy interstate 5, near medford, oregon. threw down a blanket. and mom delivered emma. all are doing fine. her dad is already nicknaming her, check this one out, i-5. >> yeah. >> it could be worse. you could be nicknamed l.i.e. >> expressway. >> you don't want that. i-5's not bad. >> had to arrive before black friday. emma knows what she's doing. congratulations to them.

we're going to turn, now, to the stunning video of that record-breaking heist in a luxury jewelry store. it took place on one of the most famous streets in the world during the star-studded cannes film festival. abc's lama hasan has the story. >> reporter: captured on surveillance video, these first images of france's biggest and most brazen robbery. looks like they could be a scene straight out of "the pink panther" movies. watch as the audacious thieves enters the jewelry exhibition at the carlton hotel in july. the same setting as the thriller "to catch a thief." he walks around, brandishing a gun, terrifying the shopkeepers and unarmed security guard, who cower on the ground for cover. swiping $143 million worth of rings, earrings and pendants. placing them in his bag in just 30 seconds. then, casually walking out and escaping, with no struggle and

without being confronted. this morning, french police are still on the hunt for this man, hoping to catch this thief. so, why the french police releasing this dramatic surveillance video now? because they are so desperate to find him. they still have no idea who he is or if he belongs to a gang such as the notorious pink panthers. and the jewels haven't turned up, either. so, the hunt is still on. bianna? >> unbelievable how brazen he is. lama, our thanks to you. $143 million in jewels. that is incredible. we turn over to dan with another story. hey, dan. >> tonight, on a special "20/20," barbara sits down with president and mrs. obama in their only interview together this year. as with all of barbara's interviews, this one is quite revealing. barbara, good morning. >> good morning. now, i see you. good morning. i have been fortunate to interview the president and first lady five, different times.

and i think you'll see that when they're together, they're different. there's an affection and a relaxation that you don't see, you know, when he's addressing the camera during a serious interview. they bring out the best of each other. do you think that the first lady might have made a better president than you? >> of course. that's an easy question. but she's smart enough to know that, you know, she might not want to go through the process. >> i absolutely don't agree. i mean, it takes -- he has a level of patience and focus and tenacity and calm, you know, that -- that just doesn't, you know, come by. >> you don't have that patience? >> i definitely don't. >> so, do you, you know, when everything's quiet late in the

evening, do you nag him and say, honey, why don't you this? that? >> no. no. i try not to do that. i try -- we both try to make sure that home is a sanctuary. particularly because when we're home, our girls are home. and they dominate the conversation when they're there. and they're not talking about issues of the day. they're talking about issues of their day, which has nothing to do with what's going on in the rest of the world. so, you know, everyone has to have their safe haven, a place of peace and calm. you know, that's home for us. so, i try to stay out of his ear. he's got enough people in his ear. >> so interesting. you never see him smile so broadly as when he's with her. did they talk at all about their plans for when they leave the white house, which isn't too far away? >> he's very young. when he leaves the white house, he'll only be 55. he says that he will not ever run again for elective office. i mean, he's not going to end up being governor or mayor of something. and a lot of it depends on

sasha, the younger child. because she will only be a sophomore by the time his term is up. so, the question is, do they stay in washington because of her? and it's something they are thinking about and discussed. or do they take her out of school and go, where? back to chicago? he has a home. he's a very young president. and he has many years ahead. >> many years ahead. you also got a chance to see them with their dogs? >> yeah. everyone's favorite dogs. well, you know, bo is 5 years old, with the white paws and the white chest. and then, they have sonny. sonny is 17 months old. i'm an authority on dogs. she says, she told me that when the president's away, she sleeps with bo. and i asked him about that. he said, no, she never does. and she said, shh. >> so, she does. this is not the first time you've interviewed a president. how many presidents have you interviewed? >> eight. eight presidents. starting with richard nixon.

i mean, some people think that i started with abraham lincoln. but that is a myth. >> no. >> eight different presidents, you see me with nixon. nixon was a very uncomfortable man. and hard to interview and get through to. and when we would sit beforehand, while the crew was getting prepared and he wanted to be sort of light, he would tell off-color jokes to the crew. >> really? >> and to loosen the crew up. and say, hey, i'm one of you because he never really felt that way. >> any other tidbits from the eight presidents you've interviewed in terms of what they're like off-camera? >> george bush liked to have laura bush next to him. he was more comfortable having her next to him. and richard nixon never had pat next to him. >> never? >> no. they were different in the way they behaved. they would tell you how much time you had in advance. bill clinton was always late and could stay forever.

awards. katy was so inspired by megan. the best-looking duo, i must say. we were right there with cameras rolling for all of the excitement. >> great story. also ahead, the medical mystery that nearly tore a family apart. the rare disease and the terrible mistake that almost cost one father everything. and aside from navigating the mall, the principal challenge on what to do today is what to do with the leftovers. this morning, advice from the man himself, emeril lagasse. we start with the mystery that threatened to tear a family apart. reena ninan has the story of a rare genetic condition that led to charges of child abuse. >> reporter: 19-month-old kenly, with her bright eyes and beautiful smile, is the center of her parents' world. but for over a year, that world

was torn apart when andrew huber was arrested for allegedly abusing his daughter. >> it was changing her diaper, like any other day. and i heard her hip pop. >> reporter: the dallas dad rushed kenly, then 3 1/2 months old, to the hospital. >> they came back to say she had multiple fractures and had to do x-rays. >> they found nine fractures throughout her body. >> reporter: but what andrew didn't know, the police had been called. and they suspected him of causing kenly's injuries. >> i went into my police interview just bawling. and they told me halfway through the interview, that kenly's injuries were through the stages of healing. >> reporter: the 31-year-old father was arrested in august of 2012, charged with second-degree injury to a child and ordered to stay away from his daughter. but his wife, bria, suspected that an underlying medical issue

was to blame. >> we never lost hope that there was an answer to this. i never had hurt my daughter in any way. >> reporter: bria took her to ten specialists in different cities, before she was diagnosed with e.d.s., a rare inherited tissue disorder. >> doctors mistake this as child abuse because they're unaware. it's an underdiagnosed disease. >> reporter: just last month, over a year since their ordeal began, the charges against andrew were dropped. and the huber family was reunited. their goal, now, to raise awareness. >> if we can get awareness out, particularly to get doctors educated on it, have a diagnosis. >> if there's one less family that has to go through this because we did, it was worth it. >> reporter: and according to the foundation, there are 1.5 million people worldwide who suffer from this disorder. >> good thing we're bringing it to the forefront.

that poor father thought she was doing the right thing. >> can you imagine? >> i can't. >> thanks, reena. now, to the american woman stealing the show in the middle east version of "america's got talent." her name is jennifer grout. she's from massachusetts. she got to the finals of "arab's got talent." rob nelson is on the story. >> reporter: she is the one of the arab world's hottest shows. wauing judges and audiences, singing in a language she barely knows. >> i speak a bit of moroccan dialect since i've lived here for a while. >> reporter: 23-year-old jennifer grout, who told us via skype from a coffee shop in morocco, that the reaction was mixed at first. >> when i first started playing, i heard a murmur of laughter throughout the audience. but 30 seconds into it, it

changed to appreciation. and it changed to cheering. >> reporter: it was a teacher's friend who con for instanced jennifer to try out for the competition. singing one of the most recognizable songs in the arab world. >> my friend contacted me and told me, it might be a great idea for you to audition for this show. >> reporter: she comes from a family of classically-trained musicians and has been singing since she was 5 years old. >> it's actually normal for me, as a classically-trained singer, to sing in languages that i don't speak fluently. >> reporter: the competition is similar to the american version of the show, with different performers laying it all out for the judges. >> there's so many talented, wonderful people on "arab's got talent." it's such a diverse community. >> reporter: and her message for all of us back home. >> if you want to do something from your heart, you should go ahead and try to do it. >> reporter: for "good morning america," rob nelson, abc news, new york.

we're going the core them. we're going to cook them until they get a nice color on them and they get tender. >> okay. >> while that's happening, we're going to make a cheese sauce. we're going to start with some butter. >> oh. >> and this is actually rice flour. >> that is for what? texture? >> there's a lot of people concerned about gluten. >> sure. >> and about wheat. we're using the rice flour that will do the trick for the sauce. so, what we've done now, we have the butter and rice flour. we've made a roux. and now, we're going to flavor it with some onion. and a little bit of garlic for me. and certainly, a little bit of thyme, as well. >> i know gluten-free is a cause near and dear to your heart, of course. your daughter has -- struggles with gluten. can you use other flours for this if you're not so challenged? >> well, if you're not so challenged, just use all-purpose flour would be great. >> all right. >> now, what we do, once that happens and the onions cook, now

what we're going to do is add milk. and to that, we're going to make what's basically a cream sauce. but then, on top of that, what we're going to do, if we step over here, which i have some made. we're going to season this, now, with a little bit of salt. and a little bit of pepper. >> that smells. >> now, we're going to take our regular cream sauce and make it into a cheese sauce by adding some gruyere cheese to this. now, this is for our thanksgiving leftovers. i'm going to turn this off. regular pasta, again, if you're gluten-free, you can use gluten-free pasta. i have, basically, some broccoli that was left over. >> love it. >> those are those shiitake mushrooms. so, we're going to add them. now, leftover turkey. what do you do with it beside a turkey sandwich? cube it up. add it in there. now, what we're going to do is we're going to take the cheese sauce. oh, look at this, baby. >> oh, yes. oh, yes.

>> now, what we're going to do is turn this into a casserole. so, we're going to fold this over. >> okay. >> and just like -- just like such, we're going to fold this over. and what we're going to do is work all these ingredients in here. we're going to add this to the casserole. top it with sliced almonds, or whatever nut that you like. and a little bit more grated cheese on top. you bake it for 40 minutes in the oven. this is what it looks like, right here. okay? >> gorgeous. >> and you have a leftover turkey pasta casserole. what else can you do with this? what we did here was we made a wonderful chicken and rice noodle soup. >> i'm in. hands off. yeah, yeah. >> carrots, celery, onions. the carcass, we made a turkey stock with, make it into a soup. my favorite is this. take a turkey salad, with apples, okay? which is like a waldorf salad. and you can make a waldorf sandwich.
